Hanover Plantation Project
The original home is a Plantation Style home which was modeled after those built across the American South prior to the Civil War. These homes are often in the Greek Revival, Neoclassical or Federal style and feature a symmetrical facade with central front door, large, evenly spaced windows, deep porches, and often stacked with Greek columns.
The owners desired a number of program spaced while maintaining and expanding the character of the original home. Partly, the challenge was to add program spaces that required a great deal of height to an existing one and a half story structure. The augmented footprint reduces the long facade and creates a curvilinear structure. The driveway will be redesigned to harmonize and centralize the various forms and become a touchstone for the grand entrance Plantation Style homes are accustom to.
The addition will include a fully remodeled and expanded kitchen, mudroom, family room, play room, as well as other required spaces. The new roof-lines and exterior elevations allow the original home to remain prominent; and the repeated dormers create a balance to the house that looks natural.
